Our curriculum continues to be an exciting journey for us all at Yendarra School. We have journeyed to a place where a difference in the lives and learning of our children is being made but we also know that we will never reach that final destination as we need to regularly review and tweak the content and delivery of our learning programmes to ensure we are continuing to meet the needs, abilities and interests of our children; truly engaging them in effective learning programmes that prepare them well for their futures.
In preparing our children for the future, the development of literacy and numeracy skills being a strong focus for us, while today's child must to be proud of their own ancestry and heritage, as New Zealand becomes more and more multi-cultural another important focus for us at Yendarra is teaching our children to be tolerant of other cultures.
With this in mind we worked with our whanau , tamariki and kura from our four main ethnic groups Maori, Samoan, Cook Island Maori and Tongan over two years to ensure that while our different cultures were reflected through our Vision, Principles, Values, Expectations and Key Competencies, our common thread throughout the school 'Many cultures one school family' established early on in our journey was retained.
And so, at this point in our journey we have effective learning programmes in place which are regularly reviewed and we have our own Yendarra culture, our waka now symbolic of our approach and belief that united as one school family, with a shared Vision, and agreed Principles, Values, Expectations and Key Competencies together everyone will achieve more, live, learn and work together more effectively and be well supported to 'Be the BEST they can.' |
