We are excited by the possibilities that our newly dug ‘Kumara Patch’ and wharekai (kitchen /dining room) offer us. Our magnificent vegetable garden and orchard will continue to enhance our school environment and more importantly, help keep us healthy. We know that what we eat has a big impact on how we think, feel and behave, and vegetables and fruit are vital for a healthy lifestyle.
This has been a self funded school project with generous support of kitchen items from the following people:
Tony Falkenstein - Just Water
Sarah Powell
Fisher & Pykel
Miss Cath Allan
Ceres Organics
Mrs Deanne Hannan

Mrs Mayanna Lund
Mrs Kirsten Stanfield
Ms Christine Johnston
Mrs Lily Wong
Mrs Sarah Redfern
Mrs Kim Church
Mrs Vanessa Mercer
Mrs Rebecca McRobie
Mrs Linda Taylor
We have been heartened by your kindness and generosity and want you to know how much we have appreciated your aroha and koha.
Two living Saints have become regular visitors at Yendarra, volunteering their time, knowledge and skills to advance our students’ cooking and gardening expertise for sustainable healthy practices. Mrs Sarah Powell has been the main driver co-ordinating the teaching and learning programme in our wharekai and ‘Kumara Patch.’ Mrs Powell has been well supported by Mrs Liesl New who gardens with our children. Mrs New does exciting science investigations like putting ‘worms to bed’ in our worm farm and problem solving with beer traps to ‘lure naughty bugs.’ Of course we are also learning about good bugs.
Mrs Powell and Mrs New live our school values and dedicate their time and skill to us asking for nothing in return. This is what our school value of koha looks like and we hope that our special volunteers feel our aroha and manaakitanga when they visit our school. Each week we are excited about who Mrs Powell and Mrs New will have working with them as they introduce us to more wonderful volunteers. Ka mau te wehi!
